Buying a vehicle in New Brunswick

Four things that work differently in New Brunswick.

What the Government of New Brunswick, FCNB and the Canada Revenue Agency say about tax, prices, registration and your protection as a buyer.

01 · Sales tax

15% on every vehicle, one way or another.

New Brunswick applies a 15% tax to all vehicles. Buy from a dealer, or any GST/HST registrant in Canada, and you pay 15% HST. Buy privately and you pay 15% Provincial Vehicle Tax instead, collected by Service New Brunswick when ownership is transferred, on the fair value of the vehicle: the greater of the bill of sale price and its average wholesale value.

A private sale is not a tax saving here. The 15% is collected at transfer.
02 · Prices and fees

Compare grand totals, in writing.

The Financial and Consumer Services Commission (FCNB) reminds buyers that the cost of a vehicle includes taxes, freight and other fees, and that you need the grand total after all taxes, fees and financing charges. New Brunswick's proposed Consumer Protection Act will cover buying a vehicle at a dealership once it is implemented; FCNB gives no date yet.

Do not be swayed by the sticker price or the payment. Ask for the grand total.
03 · Registration

Tax and fees are paid when the vehicle is transferred.

To register a used vehicle you need the current registration or a titling document, an acceptable bill of sale and proof of valid insurance, and sales tax and motor vehicle fees are collected at the time of transfer. Automobile insurance is mandatory, with minimum third-party liability coverage of $200,000. Since April 1, 2026, registration stickers are no longer issued or required.

Have your insurance in place before the transfer.
04 · The regulator

Dealers are licensed, and the law protects dealer sales.

Dealers of new and used motor vehicles need a dealer licence, which requires a $10,000 security bond for most dealer types and at least 15 sales a year, and you can ask to see a dealership's Motor Vehicle Dealer Licence. When you buy from a dealer, the Consumer Product Warranty and Liability Act protects you, and you cannot sign those protections away with a waiver or disclaimer. It does not apply to private sales.

Be wary of any form that asks you to waive your rights.

Before you sign

ClearCut Clarity

$250 plus GST or HST for your province, calculated at checkout

For clients who want to negotiate independently but want a professional second opinion before committing.

  • Review of the agreed vehicle purchase price, deal structure, and every product and charge appearing on the quote or purchase agreement
  • Assessment of whether the purchase price and overall deal are fair relative to current market conditions
  • If financing terms (interest rate, term length, monthly payment) appear on the dealer's quote, those terms are reviewed and guidance is given on the rate. ClearCut does not introduce a lender, suggest another lender, or help with any credit application
  • Identification of any concerns with any element of the deal (price, fees, financing, or back-end products) before you sign
  • Findings given on a call and in a written summary provided to you
  • For licensed insurance products (life, disability, and critical illness coverage), ClearCut Auto Inc. does not provide licensed insurance advice; any insurance-specific advice must be obtained from a properly licensed insurance professional

What you provide: The dealer's quote or purchase agreement for the deal to be reviewed, with personal identifiers removed as set out in Section 5 of the Agreement.

How findings are delivered: On a call and in a written summary. The summary is written for your own decision. It is not addressed to, or written for, the dealer or any lender.

One quote per purchase: Each Clarity purchase is one review of one quote or purchase agreement. A revised or different quote is a separate purchase. The service ends when the written summary is delivered.

Clarity is a professional evaluation of the deal you were quoted. It never tells you whether to buy.

Advisory only. No dealer or lender communication, negotiation, or representation of any kind is included.

Best for: First-time buyers, family vehicle purchases, or anyone who wants peace of mind that the deal they have negotiated is fair before they sign.

What ClearCut does not do

Advice only. You deal with the dealership.

ClearCut is not your broker, agent or representative. The National Advisory Services Agreement does not appoint ClearCut to act for you, and ClearCut has no authority to act, sign or speak for you with anyone.

Under either service, ClearCut does not:

You deal with the dealership directly, make every decision, and decide alone whether to sign any quote or purchase agreement. ClearCut does not guarantee financing approval, vehicle availability, any price, or any savings.
